European electric two-wheeler market in 2024: Young people are adopting “soft” mobility

Young people in Europe are choosing lower carbon, more sustainable modes of transport. More and more young people are adopting "soft" modes of transport, with 72% of the 18-34 age group using public transport (65% of the total population) and 50% using standard bicycles (39% of the total population). The use of electric bicycles is also more prominent in this age group, at 31%, compared to 21% of the overall population.

As of May 2024, the European market has 64,086 electric two-wheeler sales at the beginning of the year (+16.7%).

However, looking only at the Western European market (30 countries including UK) the segment has lost 11.3% this year, following the 21% lost in 2023, while in East Europe (8 countries including Turkey) sales boomed 90%, after the +264 reported last year.

At country level, Turkey is the largest market with sales up again 92.7%, followed by  France (+29.8%) the Netherlands (+1.8%).

Behind,  Italy (-33.5%), Spain (+46.9%), Germany (-30.3%), Belgium (+7.5%), the United Kingdom (+0.4%), Austria (+11.1%) and Denmark (-5.4%).

The leading suppliers of e-bikes to the European Union in 2023 were Taiwan, Vietnam, and China. While over 40 million bikes were imported from Taiwan, around 19 million and 13 million units were imported from Vietnam and China respectively. The EU had introduced anti-dumping tariffs on e-bike imports from China in 2019, which had impacted import volumes. However, these measures were set to expire at the beginning of 2024.

In 2023, cars will still be the main mode of transportation in Europe, but electric bikes penetration is increasing:now 1 in 5 households in Europe owns an electric bike (19%, +2 points). This trend might be driven by the increasing accessibility and affordability of electric bikes, as well as their enhanced features such as assisted pedaling.

There is also an intensification of the use of electric bikes: 42% of users say they use it more often than 5 years ago, and 32% say they intend to use it more in the future.

More broadly, there is a trend towards a more intense use of soft mobility and public transport in the future: Europeans say that they will use walking (32%), standard bikes (25%), and public transport more frequently in the future (25%), all these modes of transport having a positive "delta" (more often – less often) in future usage intentions.
